Okay, I’ll just say it. Most calendar templates are boring. A grid, some dates, done.
Mine has digital stickers.
This Google Sheets calendar template is made for teachers. It looks like a page out of a digital planner, but it’s easy to share with your students and their parents.
What’s in This Google Sheets Calendar Template
Digital Stickers You Drag Right Onto the Calendar
This is the part I’m most excited about. Pick a sticker, drag it onto the day, and your calendar instantly looks cute AND tells everyone what’s coming up. Picture day, field trips, pizza lunch, early dismissal. Way more fun than typing “PD day” in a box.
A Class Newsletter That Matches
There’s a class newsletter template in the same set, so your monthly calendar and your newsletter go together. Parents get one tidy update, and you don’t have to make two things look nice.
Type Your Starting Year Once
Type in your starting year, and every calendar switches to the right dates on its own. So you can keep using it year after year.
There’s also a weekly newsletter template. Pick the first Monday of your school year, and every week’s date is ready in a drop-down list, so you’re not typing dates every Friday.
Landscape AND Portrait
Some months you want a wide calendar for the projector, and some months you want a tall one for a printout or the class website. You get both, so you can pick whatever fits.
Easy to Share With Students and Parents
A calendar only helps if people actually see it. Download your Google Sheets calendar template as an image or a PDF and pop it into Google Classroom, Seesaw or Class Dojo. Families see the month at a glance, and you get fewer “wait, is it pyjama day tomorrow?” emails.
What to Put on Your Class Calendar
Not sure what’s worth adding? Here’s what I’d put on a monthly class calendar so families know what’s going on:
- Picture day and retake day
- Field trips, plus when forms and money are due
- Library and gym days, so nobody forgets their sneakers
- Spirit days, like pyjama day or crazy hair day
- Early dismissals, PD days and holidays
- Report card and parent-teacher interview dates
- Student birthdays (a sticker makes it extra cute)
- Tests and project due dates for older grades
Add the big dates when you get your school calendar, then fill in the rest as the month goes. Your Google Sheets calendar template is ready to send home whenever you are.
What to Put in Your Monthly Class Newsletter
The calendar covers the dates. The newsletter is where you tell families what’s actually happening in your room. Here’s what I’d include each month:
- What you’re learning in each subject, in a sentence or two
- Upcoming dates to remember (point them to the calendar)
- Spelling words or math facts to practise at home
- Reminders, like library books, gym shoes or forms to send back
- A shout-out to a class win or something fun you did
- Ways families can help, like supplies you need or volunteer spots
- How to reach you
Keep it short. Families love a cute one-pager.
How I’d Use It Each Month
If I were still in my grade 4 classroom, here’s how I’d use this. The week before a new month, I’d fill in the calendar and the newsletter, download both as PDFs and attach them to my beginning-of-the-month email to families.
Then I’d schedule that email ahead of time. When the day came to send the newsletter, it would already be on its way, and I wouldn’t have to think about it.
Why Google Sheets?
Teachers kept telling me how simple my Google Sheets teacher planners are to use. So when I made this calendar and newsletter set, I built it in Google Sheets on purpose and brought over the planner features you love, like digital stickers.
I love this Lesson plan template! I like that I’m able to update my lesson plans and monthly calendar all in the same place. The daily plan is perfect for when I have meetings and have a sub taking over my small groups.
Bonnie F., 5 stars, Google Sheets teacher planner
New to Google Sheets? It’s free with any Google account, and if you can type into a box, you can use this. Click on a day, type “picture day” and you’re set. When plans change, just change the text.
A Google Sheets calendar template also works on your laptop, your school computer and your phone, so you can update it wherever you are.
It Matches Your Google Sheets Teacher Planner
If you use my Google Sheets teacher planner, this calendar has the same look, so your plans and your calendar go together. (Matchy-matchy, but make it digital.)
Using my digital teacher gradebook? The calendar works the same way, so there’s nothing new to learn.
It Comes in 3 Looks
You get Preppy Classics, Preppy Pastels and Preppy Brights, all in the same listing. Pick the one that matches your room.
