When jumping in to write report cards, it’s helpful to read report card comments for teachers, from other teachers. Although the report card comment examples included in this blog post are highly specific to the students in which they were written about, they can serve as an example of how to word certain comments.

Beginning of the Year Report Card Comments for Teachers

These examples of report card comments for teachers are from the month of November, at the end of the first term. They comment on students’ progress so far, share what they’ve been doing well and how they can have a successful year.

STUDENT values learning. She is hardworking and motivated to do her best work on all tasks. She consistently demonstrates the virtues of respect and responsibility. STUDENT has a gift for synergizing with others. She works well with all her peers, is patient and listens to their opinions. Through the virtue of confidence, I encourage STUDENT to participate by raising her hand more often in class, as she has great insight to share. At this time, STUDENT is reading above level. She reads fluently, with expression and has a strong comprehension of the texts she reads. She is excelling in writing and is a passionate writer. STUDENT has met all grade level expectations in Math this term. In Science and Social Studies, she showed an exemplary understanding of the units taught this term. STUDENT is a well-rounded student. She works hard in all academic tasks and also gets along well with others. I am so pleased that STUDENT joined us at SCHOOL NAME this year. She’s an absolute joy to teach! Keep up the great work, STUDENT!

STUDENT is polite and shows cooperation with others. He regularly demonstrates that he values people and community. He willingly helps peers at his table and contributes to our classroom community through his weekly leader job. STUDENT is working on Habit 1: Be Proactive in learning strategies that help him best focus on class lessons and activities. In reading and writing, he met grade level expectations. As a reader, STUDENT reads with expression and accuracy. He is working on slowing his pace in order to better comprehend what he reads. As a writer, STUDENT is working on carefully selecting details and the vocabulary that he uses. In Math, STUDENT met grade level expectations. In Science and Social Studies, STUDENT met grade level expectations. When working on projects or assignments, especially in Science and Social Studies, I encourage STUDENT to look at the rubric and expectations carefully to ensure that he shows his learning. STUDENT’s enthusiasm, positive energy, and sense of humour makes him fun to be around and well liked by his peers. I look forward to seeing what STUDENT will accomplish next term! Keep up the good work, STUDENT!

STUDENT is caring and shows enthusiasm for learning. He has a great sense of humour, is incredibly inquisitive, and spreads joyfulness in our classroom. He is highly regarded at our school and has become more interested in building friendships as the term has gone on. Our big goal for him this year is to gain independence. We will continue to build on those independent skills, where and when appropriate. As a reader, STUDENT reads grade four level texts, with accuracy. It’s evident that he uses his wonderful memory when reading, as he rarely has to sound words out. During our literacy block, STUDENT is working on building his reading comprehension as he has difficulty comprehending the books that he can read with accuracy. As a writer, STUDENT can provide ideas for content, with prompting. As the term has gone on, he has been less reluctant to write on his own. He has also enjoyed exploring the use of technology to complete writing tasks. STUDENT is working on a modified writing program in order to help him build independence in writing. In Math, STUDENT has a fantastic memory for processes and has some number sense. He had some difficulty meeting grade level expectations this term, therefore, STUDENT is working on building his numeracy skills through the PROGRAM NAME. He has started by comparing numbers that are greater and less than and will move into double digit addition and subtraction. STUDENT enjoyed the content in our Science and Social Studies units this term. It’s no secret that he is curious and loves to learn about the world around him. STUDENT is most successful when he can show his learning in different ways, such as having a conversation, working on a project with a partner, answering prompting questions, etc. He is also most engaged in these subjects when subject matter is accessed through an engaging video or a hands-on experience. We will explore more of those opportunities in term two. I have loved getting to know STUDENT. I am so excited to see what the rest of the year has in store. Keep up the great work, STUDENT!

STUDENT is kind hearted, has a great sense of humour, and is a deep thinker. He is always so patient and compassionate with all of his classmates. At times, STUDENT benefits from reminders to stay focused on the task at hand. However, toward the end of the term, he started moving to another spot, without being prompted, to better focus on his assignment. I’m proud of him for making those choices! In English Language Arts, STUDENT is reading above grade level. In Writing, he showed a proficient understanding in our units on analyzing and annotating narrative pieces and writing exciting beginnings. In Math, STUDENT showed proficient understanding in most assignments in the Whole Numbers to 10 000 and Patterns and Equations units. Sometimes, STUDENT benefits from sitting with an adult to complete a few questions together and then he can complete the rest of the assignment independently. In Science and Social Studies, STUDENT demonstrated proficiency in assignments and projects this term. Within the Waste in Our World unit in Science, some topics we learned about were decomposers, types of waste, and methods of disposal in Fort McMurray. In “A Sense of the Land” unit in Social Studies, students learned about Alberta’s regions, provincial and national parks, and how Albertans use the land. STUDENT is such a pleasure to have in the classroom with his cheery personality. I’ve really enjoyed getting to know him this term!

STUDENT has a big heart. He willingly helps his peers and loves his classmates, his family, and his teachers. STUDENT has made a big effort to make good choices this term, even when he’s feeling dysregulated. He also focused on taking ownership of his choices. He’s been making some progress in taking ownership, with coaching from the surrounding adults. In English Language Arts, STUDENT is reading at grade level. In Writing, he was approaching grade level understanding in our units on analyzing and annotating narrative pieces and writing exciting beginnings. STUDENT benefits from support to edit his writing pieces to ensure they make sense. In Math, STUDENT showed exemplary understanding in the Whole Numbers to 10 000 unit and proficient understanding in the Patterns and Equations unit. Math is one of STUDENT’s strengths and it’s wonderful to see his confidence shine in this subject. In both Science and Social Studies, he showed proficient understanding in most assignments and projects this term. STUDENT she showed a proficient understanding in our writing units on analyzing and annotating narrative pieces and on writing exciting beginnings. In Math, STUDENT demonstrated proficient understanding by the end of the Whole Numbers to 10 000 unit. STUDENT was responsible in getting help when she needed it, in order to improve. In the Patterns and Equations unit, STUDENT was approaching grade level understanding. In both Science and Social Studies, she showed proficient understanding in assignments and projects this term. Within the Waste in Our World unit in Science, some topics we learned about were decomposers, types of waste, and methods of disposal in Fort McMurray. In “A Sense of the Land” unit in Social Studies, students learned about Alberta’s regions, provincial and national parks, and how Albertans use the land. STUDENT’s motivation to improve makes me optimistic about what term 2 will bring! I’ve loved getting to know her this term. 

Mid-Year Report Card Comments for Teachers

These examples of report card comments for teachers are from the end of the second term, which is the end of March. They share what progress students have made they term and continue to share strategies and encouragement for further progress within the last term.

STUDENT continues to demonstrate daily perseverance. He is also full of positive energy, friendly, and committed to improving. His great work ethic has helped him make some significant progress this term. In reading, STUDENT is now at level. This is an enormous accomplishment as this has been a goal of STUDENT’s for quite some time. He has learned many strategies that support him as he decodes words that he hasn’t yet committed to memory. I am so incredibly proud of him! STUDENT’s writing has also improved. He demonstrated proficiency in our fiction narrative unit and specifically improved in the areas of content and sentence structure. Math continues to be a strength for STUDENT. He showed a proficient level of understanding in the patterning and multiplication and division units and an exemplary understanding in the measurement unit. Most importantly, STUDENT has become more confident in trying various strategies when he doesn’t instantly grasp numeracy concepts. This has helped him continue to be successful. In Science and Social Studies, STUDENT has improved. Through being able to choose how he would like to provide evidence of his learning, he has really showcased his knowledge. He was especially engaged when participating in hands-on projects during the Wheels and Levers unit in Science. STUDENT has had a great term, full of growth! I can’t wait to see what he will accomplish in term 3!

Every day, STUDENT demonstrates the virtues of confidence, honesty, consideration, and diligence. He is a great, well-rounded student as he remains focused on his academics, steps up as a leader, actively participates in class, and eagerly supports his peers. In reading, STUDENT continues to be above level. He reads at a great pace, with accuracy, and has a deep comprehension of the texts that he reads. STUDENT demonstrated exemplary writing during our fiction narrative unit. He specifically improved in the organization of his pieces. In Math, STUDENT excels. He showed exemplary understanding in most units this term. His deep understanding in numeracy gives him the confidence to support his classmates in this area. In Science and Social Studies, STUDENT loves the freedom of being able to choose how he wishes to provide evidence of his learning. He has chosen everything from building hands-on projects to creating videos of him explaining concepts. I am proud of STUDENT for all of his hard work this term. I can’t wait to see what term 3 brings! Keep it up, STUDENT!

STUDENT consistently demonstrates that he values persons and community. He’s inclusive and kind toward all of his peers. STUDENT practices the virtues of honesty, consideration, and creativity. Throughout term 2, STUDENT continued to work on valuing learning and responsibility. For the majority of the term, he demonstrated these values. He is working on making this a consistent, daily habit. In reading, STUDENT continues to be above level. He is a strong reader who reads with good pacing, expression, and accuracy. He also has a strong understanding of the texts at his level. In writing, STUDENT improved this term in the vocabulary that he uses. Within our fiction narrative unit, he had some difficulty writing content that engaged his readers and attending to conventions. I am hopeful that in our next unit, informational writing will be an area of strength for him as he loves to learn and share facts. In Math, STUDENT demonstrated proficiency in the patterning, measurement, and multiplication and division units taught this term. He is confident in Math and it’s certainly an area of strength for STUDENT. In Science and Social Studies, he especially enjoys hands-on projects and having the choice of how he wishes to provide his evidence of learning. He did especially well in our Wheels and Levers unit. He deeply understood the concepts and could apply his knowledge. I am looking forward to another term with STUDENT. I am hopeful that he will continue to apply himself to get the very most out of our class time together!

Unfortunately, due to STUDENT’s attendance, I am unable to provide a fair and accurate assessment for this reporting period. I am hopeful that, with continued attendance and more time with STUDENT on the necessary outcomes, he will make great progress in our final term. I sincerely enjoy having STUDENT in class, as do his classmates, and look forward to our last term together!

STUDENT demonstrated the virtues of humility, friendliness, generosity, and patience. He continues to use his big heart to help his friends and building meaningful friendships. STUDENT is learning to value his learning and put this into practice consistently, each day. At times throughout term 2, he was incredibly focused and very open to asking for help whenever he needed it. As the year goes on, STUDENT is becoming more preoccupied with how others perceive him, so there are times when he is less open to accepting support. STUDENT and I have been working out a way for him to gain the independence that he desires while also ensuring that he’s well supported academically. In reading, STUDENT is reading at a grade one level. However, I am very proud of him for the growth he’s made so far this year as he has moved up five reading levels which is very exciting. That means that he is now reading at an end of grade one reading level. STUDENT is also writing at a beginning level. He has gained more independence in writing by using the speech to text on the Chromebooks. At times, he needs to be reminded to use this great tool, but knows how to use it to his advantage. In Math, STUDENT is beginning to confidently grasp some concepts in the units taught this term. He has been gaining independence with the strategies practiced in class. At times, he benefits from coaching to remember how to use the strategies taught. In Science and Social Studies, STUDENT loves to do hands-on projects and prefers to share his learning orally when providing his evidence of learning. This allows him to share what he’s learned within our units in an area that fits his strengths. STUDENT’s gentle nature and great leadership skills make him a wonderful student. I am hopeful that with strong attendance, he will continue to make gains throughout term 3.

End of the Year Report Card Comments for Teachers

STUDENT is a proud leader. He knows that his exceptional leadership skills are one of his many strengths and he’s proud of himself for that. He’s always one of the first students to jump in and help with any task. STUDENT regularly demonstrates the virtues of responsibility, compassion, and helpfulness. This term, he’s been participating more often during class lessons and discussions as he’s become comfortable within our classroom. STUDENT is well liked by his peers and regularly puts a smile on everyone’s face. In Reading, STUDENT remained at level this term. Great work, STUDENT! In Writing, he continued to approach grade level expectations. He continues to benefit from planning out his ideas before he begins writing to ensure his content is interesting and organized. In Math, STUDENT showed proficient understanding in most units taught this term. He had some difficulty in the Data Analysis unit. When reflecting on this term, STUDENT expressed that he knows he’s a good leader and is kind to others. STUDENT has met all curricular outcomes this year. I’ve enjoyed getting to know STUDENT and having him in 4E. Have a lovely summer, STUDENT!

STUDENT is a joy to be around. She is always cheerful and optimistic. She has a great sense of humour, and loves to make others smile. STUDENT regularly demonstrates the virtues of commitment and trustworthiness. Over the course of the year, her confidence has also grown which is so great to see. In Reading, STUDENT is at grade level. During term 3, it was evident that her confidence in reading has grown as she regularly volunteers to read in front of the class whenever the opportunity arises. In writing, STUDENT is also at grade level. This term, she was working on attending to conventions. In Math, STUDENT improved this term. She is becoming more open in asking for help when she needs it. With a bit of support and sticking to strategies that work for her, she was able to build her numeracy skills. I am so proud of her for that! In reflecting on her strengths, STUDENT shared that art is something she feels she is best at. She stated that it helps her focus and relaxes her. STUDENT has met all curricular outcomes this year. I’ve loved getting to know STUDENT. She is fun to be around and works hard. I wish her the very best in grade 5!

STUDENT continued to be incredibly reflective throughout term 3. She regularly demonstrated the virtues of perseverance, confidence, and excellence. STUDENT is always seeking to improve academically and to grow as a person. I am very proud of her for this as it is a difficult skill to develop, and it has helped her grow in a variety of ways, such as being more inclusive of her peers. In Reading, STUDENT continues to be above grade level. She is an expressive and confident reader. In Writing, she exceeds grade level expectations. When reflecting on her strengths, she expressed that she believes she’s a talented writer but can still improve. She shared that she prefers to write fiction as she can “let her imagination roam free.” In Math, STUDENT demonstrated exemplary understanding in most units taught this term. STUDENT has met all curricular outcomes this year. I am grateful that she was a part of our class. She brought a certain pizazz to our class that would have been missing without her. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed teaching her. Have a fabulous summer, STUDENT!

STUDENT lives the virtues of humility, patience, and understanding. He has a big heart and is always kind to his classmates. At times, he needs to be reminded to let his ideas out during drafting, even if he doesn’t feel they are perfect yet. He can revise and edit his ideas once they are on the page. In Math, STUDENT showed proficient understanding in most units taught this term. He was the most successful in the Data Analysis unit. When reflecting on his strengths and areas for improvement, STUDENT shared that he is most proud of his personal narrative writing piece as he wrote lots of detail. He believes that he needs the most improvement in Math. Math is an area where STUDENT needs to build confidence in his skills. Oftentimes, if he needs help, it’s just for a few short minutes before he’s on his way to doing it independently. STUDENT has met all curricular outcomes this year. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed watching him grow this year and I’m very proud of him for his perseverance and hard work. Keep it up in grade 5, STUDENT!

STUDENT values people and community. He is a ray of sunshine in our school. He is incredibly kind and compassionate. This term, STUDENT was working on ensuring he asks for help whenever he needs it. As he’s growing he seems to be comparing his skills more to the skills of his peers. STUDENT is becoming less comfortable seeking help. This is worrisome because he requires support for most academic tasks but is reluctant to accept it. I highly encourage STUDENT to use his confidence to seek help whenever he needs it to make sure that he gets the most out of his next school years. In Reading and Writing, STUDENT is significantly below grade level. However, it is important to note that he has improved, especially in reading. He has built up a repertoire of strategies to decode words. In Math, STUDENT was beginning to grasp some of the concepts in the units taught this term. Again, he is most successful when completing his work with an adult to help guide him in practicing various strategies. With modification and accommodations, STUDENT met curricular outcomes this year. I’ve enjoyed getting to know STUDENT this year. He has such a pure heart and I believe that we could all learn lessons about kindness from STUDENT. Don’t ever lose that, STUDENT. Have the best summer!
