A Modern Summer Bulletin Board For Upper Elementary

Using a summer bulletin board set in your upper elementary classroom is sure to add a nice touch with its retro theme. Your students will be obsessed! You’ll love it too since you can leave it up for a few months leading into the end of the school year. This post offers some prep tips and other considerations when setting up your seasonal bulletin board.

The Benefit of a Seasonal Bulletin Board

The best part of using a seasonal board, like this summer bulletin board, is that you can put it up, and leave it up. This particular board can be put up sometime in April or May. Then, you and your students can enjoy it until the end of the school year, whether that be in May or June.

Until Next Year

Another bonus of choosing seasonal bulletin boards is being able to reuse them yearly. If you’re strategic about where you staple (don’t go crazy) and take it down carefully, you can reuse it without even needing to laminate the pieces! All you need to do is reprint the student templates year to year so that students can fill them out.

Interactive Bulletin Board

This retro summer bulletin board is an interactive bulletin board. That means that it includes an end of year activity so that students are included in the bulletin board creation process. It levels up this summer board from being just a cute bulletin board (although it is super cute) to being a board that students are connected to.

Why Students Love It

Your upper elementary students will love this retro summer bulletin board because of the trendy theme. If you teach grade 4-6 students, you know that they love a good trend and appreciate aesthetics. That’s why they will be all for this board with a groovy theme!

Prepping Your Board

To prep your summer bulletin board set, you’ll first need to decide which graphics, bulletin board letters, banner pieces, and student templates you would like to use. Once you’ve decided, you’ll print them out and then it’s time to cut!

Cutting Ideas

You can use a cutting machine, like a Cricut, to cut out the pieces. The jury is out on whether it actually makes this process faster. That seems to be a personal choice. For myself, I’m happy to put on a good show, like Love is Blind, and cut away! Sometimes my husband even helps!

If you are open to help with cutting, here are a few ideas! First, you can have a few student leaders cut out the bulletin board set as an early finisher activity. This works best for students who will take their time to do a good job (obviously) but also for students who regularly have their work done ahead of the others. That way, they aren’t taking their work time to help you. Another win about having students cut is that they will feel connected to the bulletin board and excited to see it up in the classroom.

Alternatively, if you have students’ parents who volunteer to help out with prep or other things, you can send home cutting with your students. You can even ask your student parent group in your newsletter to see who is open to cutting out a bulletin board set for you. You might be surprised that parents love to support the classroom in this way!

Make It Your Own

Within this summer bulletin board set, there are tons of options so that you can add your creative flair. You can use a range of graphics and different sayings within the bulletin board letters included. For example, I created two different summer bulletin board options with the same set.
