Social Distance Morning Meetings Are Possible

Are morning meetings a vital part of your day in your classroom? Are you scratching your head, wondering how in the world social distance morning meetings will work?

I get it, that was me. I felt morning meetings were SO important and I just had to find a way to make it work.

With all of the unknowns that come with teaching during a pandemic, social distance morning meetings don’t need to be one of them.

Rethinking What Morning Meetings Look Like

For most of us, morning meetings mean gathering nice and close. Probably on a class carpet or bringing chairs in to sit in a tight circle. Greetings usually involve shaking hands, giving high fives and maybe even hugs. Group activities involve sharing materials, working in groups, playing a class game.

These days, there’s a need for morning meetings to look differently.

We Know Building Community Is Important

We know the importance of building class community, especially at the beginning of the year. Most importantly, when teaching during a pandemic. So, how can we build a strong class community through social distance morning meetings?

We can get creative.

It’s Possible

It’s possible to continue doing morning meetings with social distancing. Students can remain seated at their tables or desks, instead of meeting at a carpet or in close quarters. Greetings & activities can be adapted to allow for social distancing and to follow COVID19 guidelines.

Keep Morning Meetings Alive (And Well)

We know the benefits of doing morning meetings in our classrooms. Now, more than ever, kids (and teachers) are craving connection. We can (and should) do socially distanced morning meetings to follow safety protocols but also build class community.

By the way, I’ve added monthly social distance friendly slides to my morning meeting slides bundle. I wanted to make this year just a little bit easier for you.
